Braking Bad

Firstly I'll apologise to any readers for that terrible pun. Secondly I'll apologise to myself for leaving it so long before I ditched the OEM brake rotors and pads.


It's very rare that something that is a fundimental service item is replaced and immediately transforms the car to better than when it was new.


This is exactly what happened when I decided to replace my work front brake setup with an uprated set. On my old MG ZS 180, I had replaced the front discs with grooved items. I liked the look but did not really feel any performance benefit to the higher quality rotors compared with OEM. When the time came to change the brakes on the 6 at just over 30,000 miles, I again decided to go for a set of grooved and dimpled discs coupled with Mintex pads.


Originally my intention was to simply have something that looked a little more aggressive and seeing as it was actually cheaper to buy uprated items online than get OEM spec it made sense to try them out.


Reasearching the 6's setup revealed a few interesting thing. Firstly that the discs were identical in fitment / diameter and specification to the items fitted to the MGZT CDTi / 160. This was a nice discovery as I had changed discs and pads on my old ZT CDTi about 5 years ago so was confident about the nuances of this particular brake system. Secondly I discovered that the brake pad wear sensor was NOT the same as the ZT. Technically it is, but the fitting to the loom on the 6 is different and without having the tools to splice it to the original fitting, I would have to buy a new one. The prices for these sensors are still ludacris. A new ZT sensor can be had for abour £10. For the 6 its £30. And to put it into perspective the set of grooved and dimpled rotors with uprated pads was under £70.


With everything bought I changed over the old worn discs, the pads and the sensor and in a couple of hours the car was ready.


Im now 500 miles onto the new setup and everything has settled down nicely. For the first time in what feels like a lifetime, I have real confidence in the braking attributes of the car. Let me be clear on something though, the standard setup is fine. I never got myself into any hairy situations but it was nothing greater than just fine. Much like my Dacia Sandero, it does the job adequetly. Now though there is a real grip when braking and the feeling of spped getting scrubbed off by the front brakes is really nice. No fade, No fuss and competant in a way that the original setup never was.


The car feels like it could handle a lot more than the 160PS that it comes with. The brakes now finally match that lovely MG chassis!
